Title: What Are Genetic Algorithms - When To Use Them, Their Use in Feature Selection, Hyperparameter Tuning and Net Architecture Optimization
Abstract: As Neural Nets were inspired by the structure of the neuron in the human brain, Evolutionary Computation, of which Genetic Algorithms (GA’s) are an instance, were inspired by the theory of evolution. Using the concepts of natural selection, GA’s are used to produce excellent solutions for difficult problems which include search, optimization, and learning. In addition, GA’s can overcome many of the limitations of other machine learning techniques as well as be used to improve those techniques. This presentation will describe the basic function of GA’s, provide several examples of their use, describe how to determine if your problem is amenable to solution using GA’s, and give a brief description of how GA’s can be used to enhance machine learning tools using feature selection, hyperparameter tuning, and architectural optimization of those tools.
